University of Charleston houses students in Beckley

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- Due to the chemical leak, classes for the University of Charleston are canceled until further notice.

In the meantime, students needing housing will be housed at the University of Charleston's Beckley campus.

Most students have not returned from winter break yet, so it is mainly affecting athletes and international students.

Classes on the Beckley campus, Martinsburg campus and online will all continue as scheduled.

"This is a real life situation and something you would not have forecasted was going to happen," says Ed Welch, UC President.  "It's not a typical shelter in place.  It's, the water system is out.  So it causes one to think creatively and to plan for what's best for the entire community."

Students on the main campus will be notified through the school's emergency alert system and via email when classes will resume.
