Students compete in Mercer County Spelling Bee

BLUEFIELD, W. Va (WVVA)-- Students from multiple schools competed for top honors at the Mercer County Spelling Bee Thursday.

Two students within fourth through eighth grades in Mercer County Schools competed at Bluefield State College that morning.

There were more than thirty total participants.

The winners-- first place finisher Nina Rana from Princeton Middle School and Miranda Cales from Sun Valley Elementary, will move on to the regional competition in Charleston this spring.

"They prepare in their classrooms with their teachers, and a lot of them spend time at home studying," said Rebecca Broyles, the pronouncer at the bee.  "The ones who are serious, the enthusiasts, get lists from other spelling bees and work on them hard."

Broyles added that good spelling can take these students far, and she's proud that they are getting into it early.
