Interim principal named at Tazewell High

TAZEWELL -- The Tazewell County School Board approved David Brockes as interim principal at Tazewell High School, at a special called meeting on Wednesday, January 8 at Central Office.

Brockes has more than 39 years of experience as an educator in Virginia. Brockes has a masters in Education Curriculum and Instruction as well as a certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies/Education specialist degree. He takes over the principal duties from Cynthia Beavers, the schools assistant principal, and George Brown, Supervisor of Secondary Education who assisted Beavers with the day-to-day running upon the retirement of Rodney Reid in November 2013.

Brockes who worked previously as an educational consultant with the Virginia Department of Education in the office of school improvement since 2009, where he provided both technology and education consultant services. In addition to working at the DOE, Brockes has been the Director of Elementary and Middle Education for Smyth County Schools from 2003-2009.

Also, Brockes has worked as an instructional technology specialist with the Virginia DOE after working exclusively at Wythe County Schools for 24 years.

While at Wythe County, Brockes worked as a science teacher, lead teacher and technology coordinator, principal of Austinville and Jackson Memorial Elementary Schools, and supervisor/lead teacher in math, science and technology.

Brockes has also served on various Virginia Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (VASCD) committees and on its board; served as an AEL trainer in math and science for Region IV; works as a technology consultant to various companies; has conducted various statewide workshops and has been a teacher at the Region III Governor's School for science and technology.

Community and professional outreach is also important to Brockes who is a professional member of the Virginia Reading Association; a member of the Virginia Society for Technology and Education and a current member of the executive committee of VASCD. Other notable organizations include the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Relay for Life, Lead Mines Puritan Club and Wythe County Habitat for Humanity.

Brockes will begin his time at THS January 9.
