Route 3 may be closed for two more weeks due to rock slide

SUNDIAL, W.Va. (AP) -- A section of W.Va. Route 3 in Raleigh County closed by a Dec. 27 rock slide might not reopen for another two weeks.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation is allowing emergency vehicles to cross the road near Sundial. Department spokesman Brent Walker tells The Register-Herald that he estimates the road will reopen to general traffic in 10 days to two weeks.

Three large boulders and debris fell onto the road. Walker says crews are breaking up unstable bedrock and working to stabilize the hillside.

He says maintenance crews will look for additional potential slides in the area after the slide is cleared.
