Wintry weather closes schools across W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Forty of West Virginia's 55 county school systems have canceled classes for Monday because of wintry weather.

The Department of Education's website shows six other counties have delayed the start of classes.

The National Weather Service reports temperatures in the 20s across the state Monday morning and light snow or flurries in some areas.

Wind chill warnings have been issued for most of the state, effective Monday evening when temperatures are expected to drop to single digits. Some areas could see wind chills of minus 30 degrees or lower Monday night.

Major John Blevins with the Salvation Army in Wheeling says the organization opened a warming shelter last week when temperatures dropped. It's a place for the homeless to warm up during the day.
