Influential Tazewell County Coach Laid To Rest

Posted:

TAZEWELL, Va. (WVVA) -- The Community of Tazewell honored a legend Sunday, when they came together to lay to rest and remember the life of coach Bill Mitchell. He passed away January 2, after a two-year-battle with cancer. He was 52 years old.

He taught in the Tazewell County school district for 30 years and was actively involved with coaching sports. He coached JV Boys Basketball and varsity girls basketball. His 2005-2006 girls basketball team made it to the Virginia state tournament for the first time in school history.

Beyond the court, Bill Mitchell used his position as teacher and coach to build relationships and positively impact the lives of his students and players. WVVA's Greg Carter still considers Mitchell to be the best coach he's ever had.

Bill Mitchell is survived by his wife Tami and their daughter Katelyn, a senior softball player at Virginia Intermont College.
