Using your cell phone in winter weather

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- With winter weather about to strike, that means it is even more dangerous to use your cell phone behind the wheel.

Travel experts at AAA say in case of an emergency, where you would need to use your phone, pull completely off the road and park in a safe place.

In West Virginia it is illegal to use your cell phone behind the wheel, unless you have a hands free device.  In Virginia, texting and driving is illegal.

"Any distraction will take away from the road.  And all of your focus needs to be on the road while you're in slick conditions," says Crissy Gray, District Office Supervisor for AAA.  "You need to be aware of what's going on.  So, distractions as of radio, your phone, eating while in the car, having your coffee... You just need to have both hands on the wheel and [be] very alert of what's going on around you."

Gray also says in bad weather, if using your phone while parked on the side of the road, do not get out of the car.  This may cause other drivers to skid to a sudden stop, causing accidents.
