Hokies Change Kicker Going Into Sun Bowl

Posted:

EL PASO, TX (WVVA) -- Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer is pinning his kicking hopes on a kicker who hasn't attempted a field goal or extra point in his collegiate career.

Coach Beamer announced Sunday that Michael Branthover will take over the kicking duties for the Hokies. Branthover hasn't attempted a competitive field goal since high school.

Despite the lack of competitive kicks, Coach Beamer said he wanted someone who would be fully involved in the game instead of relying on two separate kickers.

"Branthover's been booming them," Beamer said. "And I think in the big picture...I'd rather have one guy who's in there kicking and if he has to kick a critical field goal, he's been in the game."

Field goal kicking has been a bit complicated in 2013. The Hokies have used several kickers this season. Things became even more complicated when Giles native and starting kicker Cody Journell was dismissed from the team.
