WV War Hero Honorary Captain For Military Bowl

Posted:

BLUEFIELD, W.Va (WVVA) -- 68 years after his actions saved fellow Marines' lives during the battle of Iwo Jima, Medal of Honor recipient Woody Williams received another honor before The Military Bowl.

Williams was an honorary captain for the Marshall Thundering Herd and participated in the coin toss before Friday's game against Maryland. Williams, 90, was born in Fairmont and lived in Huntington after the war.

Williams is a huge supporter of athletics in West Virginia and said Marshall's appearance in the Military Bowl was a great way to bring positive recognition to the mountain state.
