One killed in Smyth County crash

SMYTH COUNTY (NEWS RELEASE) -- At approximately 5:50 a.m., Virginia State Police were notified of a two vehicle crash on U.S. Route 11 just south of Fox Valley Road (route 645) in Smyth County, Dec. 27, 2013.
A 2007 Chevy Malibu was traveling northbound on Route 11 when the vehicle struck an icy patch on the road. The vehicle spun into traffic where it was struck by a 2000 Dodge Stratus traveling in the southbound lane.  The impact from the collision forced the Malibu off the right side of the road where it went down an embankment. The Stratus remained in the roadway.
The fatal victim in the crash was the driver of the Chevy Malibu, Sandra D. Griffin, 40, of Marion. She was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the Dodge Stratus, Mackeinze Dennison, 19, also of Marion, was taken by helicopter to Bristol Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Ms. Dennison was also wearing a seatbelt.
Senior Trooper K.S. Chapman is  investigating the crash with assistance from the  Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
The crash remains under investigation.
