Certain light bulbs will soon be off shelves in 2014

BLUEFIELD, Va (WVVA)-- You may be in the dark about how certain popular light bulbs will soon be off the shelves.

Production of 40- and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs is set to halt January 1st.

This comes after former president George W. Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act into law back in 2007, removing less efficient bulbs from production.

That now means that bulbs in those wattages will be limited to compact fluorescents and LED's come the new year.

Experts we spoke with say these options come with more energy efficiency, despite a higher cost, and they could also save you money over time.

"Your incandescent bulbs are the older style. People are used to them, they do use a lot of energy. The LED's, those consume around 80% less energy and they last a lifetime," said Lowes store manager Bo Stephenson.

Stephenson says the store in Bluefield, Virginia is prepared for the transition, and still has plenty of the older bulbs in stock if you're not ready to give them up just yet.
