UPDATE: 

A Norfolk-Southern freight train derailed in McDowell County Friday morning, leaking asphalt into a nearby creek.

At least 17 cars and two tankers derailed in the Vivian area near Kimball around 8:35 a.m.

Crews worked Saturday, continuing to clean up the mess that involved ten of the train cars piled together, with seven remaining upright. According to an Associated Press report, the train had five locomotives and 111 cars in total.

The train was traveling eastbound from Ohio to North Carolina carrying liquid asphalt, some of which spilled into the Elkhorn Creek. A 700-foot portion of the track was damaged in the accident.

Now, Norfolk Southern spokesman Robin Chapman says one of the tracks is expected to be reopened around 1 PM Saturday, the other, around 10 PM. 

Local hazmat crews have since cleared the scene, and Norfolk Southern crews are assessing the situation. They have contained the asphalt spilled, and Chapman says they are working to recover that product.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. It could be weeks or months before a report is completed.

VIVIAN, W. Va. (WVVA)-- A Norfolk-Southern freight train derailed in McDowell County Friday morning, leaking asphalt into a nearby creek.

According to NS Spokesperson Robin Chapman, one tanker ruptured and spilled asphalt into Elkhorn Creek.

Ten of the cars were piled together, with seven remaining upright. According to an Associated Press report, the train had five locomotives and 111 cars in total.

The train was traveling eastbound from Ohio to North Carolina. The tracks are now closed in both directions. A 700-foot portion of the track was damaged in the accident and will have to be replaced.

A Hazmat team was called to the scene. Booms were in place to prevent the tar from spreading down the creek.

NS expects the track to be reopened around 3 p.m. Saturday.

Crews from the Department of Highways, Welch Fire Department, and Kimball Fire Department also responded to the scene.

There were two crew members on board at the time of the accident. No injuries were reported.
