GLEN DANIEL (WVVA) – A joyous time of the year quickly turned tragic in Raleigh County Thursday morning, when a fire destroyed an apartment building and displaced more than a dozen residents.

The fire began at the building on Coal River Road in Glen Daniel around 1 a.m. Residents say they smelled smoke and exited the building in time to see flames coming from the front.

All occupants made it out of the building safely, but much of their belongings were lost, including children's Christmas presents from the day before.

Trap Hill, Lester, Coal River and Clear Creek Fire Departments all battled the blaze.

Coal River Road was temporarily shut down early Thursday as crews battled the flames.

The landlord says the structure was built in the 1950s. The state fire marshal's office is investigating.
