Beckley church makes sure no one lonely at Christmas

A Raleigh County church makes sure folks are not lonely on Christmas.

The United Methodist Temple in Beckley hosted their annual Community Christmas Dinner, and in the end all those involved with the event were no doubt filled with the Christmas Spirit.

"There are no certain requirements.  It's for anyone who wants to come out for fellowship and a meal," says Lisa Walker, coordinator of the dinner.  It's been a beloved tradition at the church for 18 years.

"There are people who come here because they don't have family that live here.  Maybe they are widows.  They come and this is the only fellowship they have on Christmas Day that they are not home alone," says Walker.

In the first 30 minutes after the doors were open, Walker says 65 were served.  Organizers had  planned to serve more than 500.

"I came today because I would have eaten Christmas dinner alone.  My family are elsewhere," says Mark Stover of Crab Orchard.

"My son is in New York. I only have one kid and these are my family," says Joe Hicks of Bradley.

For Walker and her family, the event has become their own Christmas tradition.

"It's like a renewal of your spirit. You are helping someone and there is still that human connection with people that you may not even know to be thankful for what you can do for them and them to be thankful for what you are doing is very important," says Walker.
