Crab Orchard Baptist Church hosts Christmas Eve dinner

Today a Raleigh County church continues a beloved tradition among their congregation.

Crab Orchard Baptist Church hosted their annual Christmas Eve Dinner, and church members were not the only ones filled with the Christmas spirit.

From a traditional Christmas dinner to gifts for children, Crab Orchard Baptist Church opens their doors for their annual Christmas Eve Dinner. It's been a beloved tradition for seven years.

"We do this as an outreach to our community and our friends and family around us just to celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus and just to share the many blessings," says Sue Swepson, organizer of the dinner.

The event is literally open to anyone in the community with about 600 being served dinner. A hundred church members help make the dinner a success. Among the volunteers are teenagers and young children, some of whom are giving up a day of Christmas vacation from school.

"Because I love giving the spirit of Christmas out to the local children," says 9-year old Sammi Saunders.

"There's so many people out there that don't know the meaning of Christmas, and doing this kind of teaches them the meaning of Christmas.

Planning for the dinner started a month ago.

"It's a lot of work but to it's just part of Christmas. That's one way I can really celebrate and I can hug and just share and shake hands with my neighbor and just wish everybody a Merry Christmas," says Swepson.

Church members also took Christmas dinners to dozens of folks in the surrounding areas who could not make it to the church for the dinner.
