UPDATE: Street reopened following Bluefield fire

BLUEFIELD, W.Va.(WVVA) - The intersection of Stadium Drive and Cherry Street, just below Bluefield Regional Medical Center, has reopened Thursday afternoon.

The area was closed to traffic for nearly 10 hours as crews battled a structure fire in an abandoned apartment building.

Heavy smoke from the fire made breathing difficult in the area. Students were dismissed from nearby Bluefield Middle School at 10 a.m. due to smoke from the fire.

Members of the Bluefield, West Virginia Fire Department first responded to the scene at 4 a.m. Firefighters from two nearby agencies helped to battle the blaze.

The fire was in the walls of the building, making it very difficult for crews.

No injures were reported.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
