University of Charleston adds men's volleyball

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (December 18, 2013) – University of Charleston Athletics Director Bren Stevens today announced the school will form a varsity men's volleyball team for the 2014-15 season. The team will be the first NCAA men's volleyball team in West Virginia and the 44th Division I/Division II program in the country.
"We are very pleased to add men's volleyball to our athletic department next season," said Dr. Stevens. "This is a growing sport and one which we think will be a hit with sports fans in the Kanawha Valley due to the fast-paced and high-energy play on the floor."

Currently, the NCAA recognizes Division I and Division III championships in men's volleyball, so traditional Division II schools compete up. Three programs began play in Division I last year: Belmont Abbey College (N.C.), Coker College (S.C.) and Erskine College (S.C.). Although there are no schools in the Mountain East Conference currently sponsoring men's volleyball, there are several programs located across the region, including nine in Conference Carolinas.

Men's volleyball becomes the 18th varsity sport for the Golden Eagles, with nine men's and nine women's sports. Men's track and cross country teams are also forming new teams for the 2014-15 season. Expansion may continue, as UC leadership is currently exploring new varsity athletics opportunities for women as well.

"The University of Charleston is creating the ground work for athletes of both genders from around the world to receive a high-level education, while also continuing their athletic careers," said Dr. Stevens.
A national search for a head coach is already underway. Interested candidates are asked to contact Pam O'Brien
