Advice on holiday shopping safety

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) -

Law enforcement agencies want to make sure you are not a victim of crime this holiday season.

Experts say most thefts are smash and grab with the suspect in a hurry, taking what they can and what suspect's take may be your Christmas presents.

Authorities advise keep things like electronics and loose change out of sight like in the trunk or underneath the seat.

They also say merely covering your packages in the back of an SUV or a hatchback with a blanket may not keep your Christmas presents from being stolen.

"It's got to be out of sight like under a seat or under something solid where you can't see an outline of what you got," says Lieutenant G.W. Lightfoot of the Bluefield, West Virginia Police Department.

Lieutenant Lightfoot also advises park in well-lit areas.
