BECKLEY (WVVA) -- Raleigh General Hospital has confirmed a reduction in work force at the Beckley hospital on Tuesday.

According to Spokesman Kevin McGraw, workers were notified on Monday.

According to a release from hospital President and CEO David Darden, 14 positions were eliminated.

The positions were primarily non-patient care responsibilities.

The release further states that several other positions that had recently become vacant will not be filled. and that PRN, or as needed, positions will no longer be utilized.

Following is the full statement from Darden:

Hospitals nationwide are experiencing significant challenges that are affecting operations and financial performance.  Raleigh General Hospital is no exception.

In response to this ongoing challenging environment, Raleigh General must adjust its operations to become efficient and more streamlined while maintaining our focus on providing exceptional patient care and service excellence.  To that end, the Senior Leadership team implemented a plan on Monday, December 16th, that eliminated 14 positions.  These positions were primarily non-patient care responsibilities. Additionally,  several other positions that recently became vacant will not be filled.  Finally, we will no longer utilize employees in PRN positions on a regular, full time basis.   Our goal in impacting these positions is to provide the best opportunity for our full time and part-time employees to work consistent hours on a regular basis, thereby providing them with a more secure financial environment.

This was not an easy plan to implement, but it was necessary.   We are offering every employee impacted by this plan the maximum amount of financial assistance allowed by policy.  We will keep these affected individuals in our thoughts and prayers.

Raleigh General Hospital has faced challenges in the past and the current environment in which we work is another such challenge.   I am confident that we will successfully navigate these difficult times and become stronger through the steps we were required to take.
