Giles Wins 2A State Championship In Overtime

Posted:

SALEM, Va (WVVA) -- Every once in a while, two teams meet on a playing field and produce an instant classic game: one that's never forgotten and spoke about, years after the final whistle. Saturday night, Giles and Brunswick produced one of those games and this one happened to have the Virginia 2A State Championship on the line.

Giles defeated Brunswick 20-19 in overtime, thanks to a missed extra point by the Bulldogs. As hard as it is to believe, that probably wasn't the craziest part of the game.

Giles quarterback/tailback Tyler Perdue hit Dakota Shrader with a touchdown pass with one second left in regulation, which tied the game at 13. All the Spartans needed to do was kick the extra point and win their fourth state championship. Standout tailback and stand-in kicker Brett Whitlow hit the kick wide left.

Redemption can be funny sometimes because after Giles scored and successfully converted an extra point in overtime, Brunswick scored and missed their PAT, ending the game.

Giles finishes the 2013 season an undefeated 15-0.
