WVU Men Rally To Defeat Marshall In Capital Classic

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va (WVVA) -- For about 35 minutes, the West Virginia Mountaineers were on their way to an embarrassing loss that would have been a major setback for the 2013-2014 season. Luckily for them, the last five minutes were much better than the previous 35.

The Mountaineers defeated Marshall 74-64 in the annual Capital Classic at the Charleston Civic Center. WVU trailed most of the game but took the lead in the last few minutes of the second half and never gave it back.

Juwan Staten didn't play his best game this season but managed 19 points and six rebounds. Gary Browne and Brandon Watkins both had 12 points off the bench for WVU.

Marshall was led by freshman Kareem Canty, who finished with 16 points and nine assists. He led The Herd offense all night but was bottled up in the last seven minutes, which helped jump-start the Mountaineer comeback.

Marshall drops to 4-6 while WVU improves to 6-4.
