Two animals killed in Tazewell Co. barn fire

TIP TOP, Va (WVVA)--Two animals are killed in a barn fire.

It happened in the Tip Top area of Tazewell County near Bailey Switch Road Wednesday evening just before 10:00.

Firefighters say the blaze was likely caused by wet hay spontaneously combusting-- which can happen if it's not stored dry.

Two calves were lost in the fire, but a cow and two horses were saved. There were no people injured.

It is possible a settling tank exploded as the flames engulfed the barn, which was destroyed.

When firefighters arrived, the barn was fully engulfed. Crews from Bluefield Virginia fire and rescue as well as the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office responded to the call, according to Chief Jim Hardy.
