WVU Misses Opportunity With Loss To Gonzaga

MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WVVA) -- West Virginia's loss to #20 Gonzaga Tuesday night is only a loss column now but it might hurt the Mountaineers three months from now.

WVU led the Zags at halftime and increased their lead to 10 early in the second half, but after a seven minute stretch without a field goal, Gonzaga left Morgantown with an 80-76 win.

If the Mountaineers managed to pull out that victory, it would have gone a long way to improving their extremely weak non-conference schedule. Big 12 play starts in January and between now and then, the Mountaineers play Marshall, Purdue and William & Mary. As of right now, their signature non-conference win would be against Duquesne.

Luckily for WVU, the Big 12 is stacked this season, with good (ranked) teams, nearly top to bottom. If the Mountaineers were to upset Oklahoma State or Kansas, that would go a long way towards erasing their non-conference issues.
