Area school board to meet with legislators

PRINCETON, W. Va (WVVA)-- With the next legislative session fast approaching, leaders of Mercer County Schools are being proactive.

They plan to meet with legislators to open communication and direct their attention to the school system's needs and challenges.

Superintendent Deborah Akers says this is a procedure the school board does each year. Tuesday night, the county's middle school teachers and principals on the local school improvement council met with the board.

It was a chance for them to share what they'd like to see on the agenda.

The group discussed the need for more funding to support alternative programs in schools to help get students on the right track.

But Akers says the board also plans to bring other things to the lawmakers' attention.

"We need to continue to be competitive with our salaries for our teachers," she said. "We're a border county and it's important that we be able to attract and retain good qualified teachers."

She said also on the agenda would be funding for building upgrades. "Right now we have to do that through competition," said Akers. "Sometimes, like [this week with the School Building Authority], we win. But other times we lose."

The board meets with local legislators next Monday, the 16th, at 6:30 PM at the Mercer County Technical Education Center.
