Beckley speaks up: the race is on for mayor

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- Four candidates, one spot for mayor.

Tuesday marked an important day in the Beckley mayoral campaign.  Each candidate had a chance to present an idea they would tackle as mayor at a public forum at Tamarack called "Beckley Speaks Up."

Since Mayor Emmett Pugh is stepping down at the end of 2013, the city council will be appointing a new mayor, so there will be no official election.  The public will have to contact their council members to voice who they think is best for the position.

The candidates and the ideas they presented for a "better Beckley" are as follows:

Ann Worley (current council member) -- capitalize on current assets
Bill O'Brien -- address the homeless population
Cedric Robertson (current council member) -- cut costs and consolidate services
Tony Martin -- reconnect city council and the public

Beckley Speaks Up can be viewed in its entirety from December 14 to January 3 by clicking on  The new mayor will be appointed at the January 2 council meeting.
