SBA funds new boilers for Bluefield High

PRINCETON, WV, December 10, 2013:  The WV School Building Authority (SBA) awarded Mercer County $663,000 toward replacing and installing new boilers at BHS.  The project was submitted as part of the district's 2014 Major Improvement Project proposal.

According to Mercer County HVAC specialist Gary Bailey, maintenance employees have been "welding on the old boilers and replacing parts for at least four years."  The current fire-tube gas boilers have exceeded their projected maximum life of 20 years.

Additionally, the project would replace the hot water heater assembly, upgrade electrical and plumbing fittings, and install a carbon monoxide detection system in the boiler room.

Each year, school districts have the opportunity to submit one Major Improvement proposal for a project of up to $1 million. Submissions must align with the SBA's goal of improving health and safety through efficient use of resources.

Bluefield High was built in with additions in 1962, 1993, and 2006.  The school serves 668 students in grades 9 – 12.
