UPDATE: Iaeger Elementary students to be relocated to two other schools

WELCH (WVVA) - Iaeger Elementary students will now be attending classes at two other McDowell County schools, after their school building was deemed unsafe.

Superintendent Nelson Spencer tells WVVA News that the Board of Education has voted to send the students to classrooms at Bradshaw Elementary and River View High School.

Grades Pre-K through first will be relocated to Bradshaw Elementary, while grades 2-5 will go to River View.

Spencer said no definitive date has been set for the students to resume classes, but officials were hopeful for next week.

Teachers are beginning to move their items from Iaeger Elementary to the other schools.

Spencer said a letter is being sent to parents explaining the situation and how the relocation will be handled.

Iaeger Elementary has been closed since a portion of its parking area collapsed into the river last weekend.


IAEGER (WVVA) - School will remain closed for Iaeger Elementary students through the week, after the facility was deemed unsafe following a partial collapse of the parking area.

McDowell County Schools Superintendent Nelson Spencer tells WVVA News that officials are discussing sending students to two other facilities and are working out transportation issues.

Spencer plans to meet with school staff on Wednesday.

A 100-foot by 40-foot section of the school's parking area slid into the nearby Tug River last weekend.


IAEGER, W.VA. (WVVA) -School will remain closed Tuesday at Iaeger Elementary after a large section of its parking lot washed away. 

No one is allowed on the property and a deputy is stationed there at all times. 

School superintendent Nelson Spencer says a 100-foot long and 40-foot wide section of the back parking lot slid into the river early on Saturday. An emergency meeting with the school board has been called to determine what to do next. Spencer says safety is the number one priority. 

"Some things that we are looking at if we have to move students to another school; we are looking at other school spaces that we have available, what rooms we have available in all the schools in that district if we have to move those students out of Iaeger, "says Nelson Spencer, Superintendent, McDowell Co Schools. 

A decision is expected Tuesday morning. Spencer says about 350 students attend Iaeger Elementary.



IAEGER (WVVA) - Iaeger Elementary School will be closed again Tuesday as officials explore alternative options for students following the partial collapse of a parking lot into the river.

McDowell County Schools Superintendent Nelson Spencer says an emergency board meeting is being planned to discuss several options of how to proceed with classes for the approximately 350 students who attend the school.

Spencer said a decision could be made by Tuesday morning.

An approximate 100 foot by 40 foot section of the parking area collapsed into the Tug River this weekend.

Visits to the campus are currently prohibited.


IAEGER (WVVA) -- WVVA has been told class is canceled Monday for a McDowell County school because a large portion of the parking lot has fallen into the nearby river.  

A drilling core company is supposed to be inspecting the property at Iaeger Elementary School.  

The collapse happened overnight Friday into Saturday.  

No one was on the property at the time.
