W.Va. weighs housing 400 prisoners in Ky.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A private prison company is the lone bidder for a contract to house up to 400 West Virginia inmates out of state.

The bid received Thursday was from Corrections Corporation of America. The Charleston Gazette says the company would incarcerate the prisoners at the Lee Adjustment Center near Beattysville, Ky.

West Virginia Corrections Commissioner Jim Rubenstein said he hopes to send a team to the prison later this month to conduct staff interviews and evaluate the facility.

Rubenstein said the state will review the company's cost proposal in a second bid opening later this month. He said that will allow officials to determine if the arrangement makes fiscal sense.

Rubenstein said corrections reforms are reducing crowding at state prisons at a faster pace than expected.
