Copper theft dims portion of 'Holiday of Lights'

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - Part of Bluefield's Holiday of Lights celebration is dark, thanks to a grinch -- or grinches -- who stole copper cables from the display.

Dwight Godwin, Director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department, says the lights display in Lotito Park was targeted on two separate occasions -- once on Sunday and again on Tuesday.

Extension cords were stolen, leaving portions of the popular holiday attraction without power.

Godwin says it will take approximately $2,000 to restore power to the affected portions of the display, and that the display will be back at 100 percent as soon as possible.

The Bluefield Police Department is investigating. Godwin says to his knowledge no suspects have been identified.
