United Way removes group that served area counties

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) -- United Way Worldwide's Board of Directors has removed an organization that served parts of West Virginia and Virginia.

Media outlets say the board announced Monday that the United Way of the Virginias is no longer a member of the worldwide charity organization.

The local organization lost its West Virginia tax-exempt status and charity registration in 2008 because it didn't file required reports. Its executive director resigned in October.

It served Mercer and McDowell counties in West Virginia, the town of Bluefield, Va., and Buchanan, Bland and Tazewell counties in Virginia.

Mercer and McDowell counties and Bluefield, Va., will now be served by the United Way of Southern West Virginia. The three Virginia counties will be served by the United Way of Virginia Highlands.
