Kristensen goes from walk-on to hero for Hokies

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Eric Kristensen wasn't on Virginia Tech's roster until late September. Hokies coach Frank Beamer says he referred to him simply as "Michigan" because that's where the 5-foot-11 placekicker grew up.
Fast forward two months and the freshman walk-on's three field goals proved critical as Virginia Tech beat rival Virginia 16-6 on Saturday night.
Kristensen says the Hokies coaches "know my name now."
The kicker was pressed into duty two weeks ago when Beamer dismissed Cody Journell from the team after a series of missteps. In the Hokies' last game two weeks ago, Kristensen missed a 34-yard field goal. He later made a 31-yarder, but the miss proved crucial as they lost 27-24 to Maryland in overtime.
He didn't miss at against the Cavaliers, connecting from 22, 30 and 38 yards.
