University attempts to suppress drinking 'tradition'

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVVA) -- The University of Virginia is trying to put a cork in a booze-drenched tradition.

The annual drinking tradition would have been Saturday for the football game against Virginia Tech.

It's called the "fourth-year fifth."  Students try to polish off a fifth of liquor before the highly anticipated game.

Administrators and peer education groups are reaching out to minimize participation in the "fourth-year fifth."

Past surveys show only about 17 percent of respondents take part in the so-called tradition.
