Humane Society of Raleigh County in danger of closing

BECKLEY, W. Va (WVVA)-- Leaders of the Humane Society of Raleigh County say it's in trouble.

It's currently a no-kill shelter, meaning they do not euthanize any animals they take in.

But decreased adoptions... Plus treating sick animals and caring for each one until they're adopted-- is taking a toll on their bank account.

Staff tell us they need to raise $14,000 by December to pay veterinarian bills and update vaccines, as well as keep their current animals fed.

Board of Directors member Erica Stock said if they can't make that deadline, they have two options.

"The only options are either for us to go back to our old ways and start euthanizing animals that are perfectly healthy and adoptable, or to close our doors because we can't afford to keep the lights on," she said.

All cages at the shelter are currently full.

The shelter is funded partly by the county, but we're told they mostly rely on donations to stay open.

To donate to the shelter, or become a sponsor, you can call the Humane Society of Raleigh County at 304-253-8921, head to their Facebook page, or visit them at their location on Grey Flats Road in Beckley.
