Police warn you to be careful traveling during storm

HINTON, W. Va (WVVA)-- With all the rain expected to change over to snow soon-- things could get even messier.

That means when you're driving-- be careful.

AAA estimates 90% of thanksgiving travelers will go by car, and deputies tell us the traffic plus this weather means an increased risk for accidents.

While highway crews are ready to plow snow after it falls, police are preparing as well.

Deputies say when winter storms are underway, they often have an increase in domestic incidents and car accidents to deal with.

"A lot of times we'll have people on one end of the county where they're trapped in the house... their family's not getting along," said Sgt. TJ Cochran with the Summers Co. Sheriff's office. "And then we may have a car wreck on the other end of the county. [Winter weather often] makes our job very stressful."

Both police and highway crews tell us the best way you can help them is to stay off the roads during the storm.

If you must go out, don't be in a rush. Take your time to get to your destination safely.
