BSC receives $10K grant from Higher Ed. Policy Commission

BLUEFIELD (NEWS RELEASE) -- Bluefield State College has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) to test General Education areas of learning by implementing Association of American Colleges & University (AAC&U) rubrics to assess BSC's General Education curriculum.

Dr. Kathy Butler, HEPC Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, notified the College of the grant award, which is funded for the 2013-14 academic year.  "Using the AAC&U rubrics, Bluefield State Will begin implementing the four broad areas of learning identified by the West Virginia Assessment Council:  Critical Thinking/Analytic Reasoning/Problem Solving; Communications; Citizenship, and; Quantitative Literacy," noted Dr. Tracey Anderson, BSC Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness.

AAC&U develops and advances assessment practices that deepen, integrate, and demonstrate student learning, through advocacy of learning-centered assessment policies, as well as support for campus work to develop meaningful assessment approaches.

Through its national initiative, Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE), AAC&U has worked with faculty and assessment expert teams across the country to develop a set of 15 rubrics through which institutions can evaluate cross-cutting capacities students develop across courses and programs.
