New River drowning victim identified

(WVVA) - A man who drowned while canoeing with his stepsons has been identified.

Gary Lee Adkins, 36, of Pax died Monday after the flat bottom canoe he was in with his two stepsons -- ages 15 and 16 -- capsized.

The accident occurred around 5:17 p.m. Monday near Meadow Creek.

One of the boys pulled the other one to the shore, then pulled Adkins to shore as well. The boys attempted CPR until rangers arrived on scene.

On Monday, November 25, 2013 at approximately 5:17 PM, NPS rangers received a call from dispatch regarding a drowning near Meadow Creek. Rangers responded, along with Green Sulphur Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources.   The victim, 36 year old Gary Lee Adkins of Pax, WV, was in a flat bottom canoe with his two stepsons, ages 15 and 16. The boat capsized half way through the Meadow Creek rapids. One of the boys was unable to swim, so his brother helped him to shore.  Adkins was also unable to make it to shore as well.  His stepson brought him to shore where the boys attempted CPR.   Rangers arrived on scene and with assistance from CSX were able to move Adkins' body to the ambulance.  NPS Rangers are investigating.
