The next session of the Virginia Legislature is just a few weeks away, and Monday morning folks from area chambers of commerce got a sneek peek at some of the issues lawmakers will be tackling.

The event was the annual Southwest Virginia Legislative Breakfast and Forum.

The Richlands Chamber of Commerce hosted the event held at New River Community College.

Senator Phillip Puckett and Delegates Israel O'Quinn, Jeffrey Campbell and Nick Rush fielded questions already submitted to organizers of the event.

They talked about the need for economic diversification with the troubles facing the coal industry and reforms in the state's standardized testing.

On the topics of education, economic development and the region's drug problem, all agreed these areas are related.

"Talk about your workforce development. You can't develop somebody that's on meth. You can't teach someone that's hooked on pills. They are going to find something more important to do that day than to come and learn," said Delegate Nick Rush, (R)-5th District.

The next session of the Virginia Legislature is January 8th.
