Police warn of elaborate paving scam; elderly couple loses $2K

DANESE (WVVA) -- Police are on the lookout for scammers after an elaborate scheme took thousands of dollars from one area couple.

The elderly couple in the Danese, Fayette County area reported that four men, who went by the name "Smith's Paving," offered to apply a treatment to their driveway on Thursday.  The alleged scammers told the couple they had just finished a treatment to a neighbor's driveway.

The couple paid the men $800 for the service.

The next day, the couple said a fifth man, apparently posing a police officer, came to their door accusing them of giving the four men counterfeit money.  The man told the couple he needed to seize all the money in their home and take it in for police testing. He took $2,000 from the couple.

Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler thinks the five men in question could be linked to a well-known group of scammers, who typically operate in Bluefield and Princeton.
