Area hospital celebrates heart health milestone

BLUEFIELD, W. Va (WVVA)-- At an Open House, an area hospital celebrates a milestone in heart health.

Bluefield Regional Medical Center is now offering cardiology services 24-7.

Doctors and nurses are on call at all hours of the day to tend to cardiac emergencies like heart attacks and chest pain, without having to take patients to another hospital for treatment.

Cardiologists say this means they can respond faster to those emergencies and potentially save lives.

"Every minute that's lost means more damage to the heart muscle," said Mohannad Bisharat, M.D., an interventional cardiologist at BRMC. "[Working in a] prompt, timely manner performing the angioplasty that we do here in Bluefield means a lot to the patient, the prognosis, and the ability to resume his normal activities [quickly.]"

According to CEO Bill Hawley, Bluefield Regional Medical Center is currently upgrading the cardiology unit as well as the MRI and ICU, projects that cost a total of nearly $11 million. That is expected to be complete in the spring.
