Former college professor recalls time with Va. Senator Creigh Deeds

ATHENS (WVVA) -- A retired Concord University professor is reflecting on the ongoing murder-suicide investigation surrounding a Virginia state senator and his late son.

Dr. David Bard had Senator Creigh Deeds in four classes at Concord in the 1970s.  The two had remained in contact over the years; Bard even knew Deeds' family.

Bard knew Deeds' son, Gus, struggled with mental health issues, but couldn't imagine something like this happening.

During this tough time, he's reflecting on his favorite times with Deeds, a study abroad trip to England.

"You get to know students well when you travel with them.  When you know students only in the classroom and only in your office at school, you only know one segment of their lives," says Bard.  "When you see them on something like travel abroad when you're with them for 24/7 for four weeks, you really get to know them."

Creigh Deeds is recovering from stab wounds at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
