Ways to save money shopping for the holidays

((WVVA)) Checking things off your Christmas list can put a hole in your wallet.

Financial experts warn that spending more than you can afford for the holidays can put you into debt for months after the season is over.

In her special report "money matters"... WVVA's Kristen Conner talked financial advisor Peter Romano to come up with a list of tips that can help you save big this holiday season.

It may involve a little legwork and some extra research, but he says it's do-able and can make Christmas more affordable.

Tip 1: Plan ahead. Know who you need to buy for, and how much you want to spend on that person.

Tip 2: Use cash, not credit. Cash allows you to see exactly how much you've spent, and Romano says you're less likely to go over-budget.

Tip 3: Do your homework. The more research you do on an item you know you want to buy, the less you'll fall for a sale that may not be all it's cracked up to be. Romano says if you know the price range for the item, you'll recognize a good deal faster.

Tip 4: Shop around. Online shopping allows you to hit more than 1 store to find a bargain.

Tip 5: Don't buy on impulse. Romano warns against buying with emotions, not reason-- stating it's often our emotional purchases that get us into financial trouble later.
