UPDATE: McDowell authorities release details on teacher arrest

WELCH (WVVA) - The McDowell County Sheriff's Office has released more information on the events that led to the arrest of a former River View High School teacher.

The sheriff's office was notified on Oct. 31 about accusations that a former teacher -- 24-year-old Randall Jared Cassels -- had solicited a female student online.

The student reported the alleged wrongdoing to a teacher at River View High School. The Board of Education then contacted the sheriff's office.

According to McDowell County Superintendent Nelson Spencer, Cassels was a teacher at River View High School from August, 2012 to May, 2013.

The suspect was living in Boone, N.C., and teaching at Piedmont High School in North Carolina at the time of the alleged incident. He is charged with solicitation of a minor via computer.

Cassels has been released on bond awaiting extradition back to West Virginia.


WELCH (WVVA) -- A teacher wanted by police in McDowell County is arrested in Union, North Carolina.

Randall Cassels, a former English teacher at River View High School was taken into custody in North Carolina last week.

Investigators said he sent a 16-year-old student messages online asking for sex.  According to a report from Charlotte NBC affiliate WCNC, Cassels met the girl while teaching in West Virginia.

At the time of his arrest, police said Cassels was working as a substitute teacher in Union, North Carolina.

He is presently being held in North Carolina awaiting extradition to McDowell County.
