MARLINTON (WVVA) - Tonight, firefighters have finally extinguished the fire that destroyed several buildings in downtown Marlinton.

The Red Cross was on the scene in Marlinton Monday where a devastating fire ripped through an entire city block the day before.

Sunday's fire burned through three buildings, affecting 13 apartments and seven businesses.

While figures initially given to WVVA by town officials indicated 13 families were displaced by the fire, the Red Cross said on Monday that it was assisting a total of 12 individuals from seven families.

Four of those affect are staying at the Marlinton Motor Inn. A restaurant in town was serving the fire victims free meals. 

Firefighters with the Marlinton Fire Department were called to return to the scene on Main Street Monday morning for a rekindling.

Crews are unable to completely extinguish the blaze, due to its internal location in the building. Officials tell WVVA's Kathlynn Stone that they are waiting for the building to collapse.

MARLINTON (WVVA) -  Seven businesses and 13 families have been displaced by a devastating fire on Main Street in Marlinton, Pocahontas County.

Multiple Greenbrier County fire crews were called to respond to the fire, which broke out around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Crews from Nicholas, Randolph and Webster counties also assisted Pocahontas County crews in battling the blaze.

The is believed to have begun at the Hudson Building on the upper end of Main Street and spread to two other structures.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Those families displaced by the fire will be staying at an area motel.

A firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
