MARLINTON (WVVA) - Tonight, firefighters have finally extinguished the fire that destroyed several buildings in downtown Marlinton.

The Red Cross was on the scene in Marlinton Monday where a devastating fire ripped through an entire city block the day before.

Sunday's fire burned through three buildings, affecting 13 apartments and seven businesses.

While figures initially given to WVVA by town officials indicated 13 families were displaced by the fire, the Red Cross said on Monday that it was assisting a total of 12 individuals from seven families.

Four of those affect are staying at the Marlinton Motor Inn. A restaurant in town was serving the fire victims free meals.

Firefighters with the Marlinton Fire Department were called to return to the scene on Main Street Monday morning for a rekindling.

Crews are unable to completely extinguish the blaze, due to its internal location in the building. Officials tell WVVA's Kathlynn Stone that they are waiting for the building to collapse.
