US attorney hands out law enforcement awards

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin is honoring more than 60 law enforcement officers, victim advocates and community leaders.

The 2013 U.S. Attorney's Law Enforcement and Victim Assistance Awards were handed out Friday at an awards ceremony at the federal courthouse in Charleston.

The recipients included officers who helped build successful prosecutions against a coal company executive and a "pill mill" operator in Logan, among other investigations

Two West Virginia state police officers also received posthumous awards for their investigation of a methamphetamine dealer.

Goodwin presented awards for outstanding law enforcement work on other major cases involving drug and violent crime, child exploitation and workplace safety.

The West Virginia State Police was named the top law enforcement agency, while FBI special agent James Lafferty was the No. 1 law enforcement officer.
