HEALTH (WVVA) – That trumpet or guitar may be collecting dust in the attic but those childhood music lessons can pay off later in life.

A new study of older adults reveals those who had musical training as children had a faster brain response to speech sounds than those who never played an instrument.

None of the study participants had performed music in nearly four decades.

The longer the participated played an instrument as a youth; the faster their brains processed speech.

Researchers say their findings confirm the importance of music education for children and the lifelong benefits this training can provide.
