Prosecutor Cracks Down on Domestic Violence Cases with New Policy

Posted:

PINEVILLE (WVVA) -- A Wyoming County Prosecutor is cracking down on domestic violence with a new policy this month.

Prosecuting Attorney Mike Cochrane said his office will no longer drop domestic assault and battery charges. He said the new policy will give prosecutors the leverage they need to place first time offenders in anger management programs and break the cycle of domestic abuse for victims who do not want to testify.

More often than not, Cochrane said these cases are getting dropped; victims too often stay silent and feel that somehow they have done something wrong.

"Our citizens are our most valuable resource. We want our citizens to feel safe and secure in their own homes. If it's a situation that escalates higher than it should, then we'll address these threats properly. We want to get the message out that we are not going to turn a blind eye," said Cochrane.

With advocates attributing up to one-third of the state's homicides to domestic violence, Cochrane hopes the new policy will break the cycle of domestic abuse before it's too late.
