'Slow roll' lane closures planned for I-77 tunnels

BRISTOL – Motorists should be alert for northbound and southbound "slow-roll lane closures" in November for Interstate 77 at East River Mountain and Big Walker Mountain tunnels in Bland County due to ventilation testing.

The slow-roll lane closures are scheduled for the overnight hours November 11 and 12 for East River Mountain Tunnel and November 13 and 14 for Big Walker Mountain Tunnel.  The slow-roll lane closures will begin around 10 p.m. each evening and conclude by 6 am the following morning.

During the slow-roll lane closures, it will be necessary to close or have flagger control at some interstate on and off ramps to prevent merging conflicts with the slow roll.  Portable message signs will be placed to alert motorists of closed or flagger controlled exit and on-ramps.

The ventilation system testing will consist of filling each individual tube with the equivalent of theatrical smoke to test the efficiency of the ventilation system and its ability to remove the smoke.

While the testing is occurring in one tube, Virginia State Police will coordinate the slow-roll lane closure in the other tube, alternating between northbound and southbound traffic in the other tube.

Motorists should anticipate delays during the testing.   Check travel conditions before traveling by dialing 511, visiting www.511Virginia.org or by calling VDOT's Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623).
