    MONTCALM, W.Va. (AP) -- A barn demolition project in Mercer County has uncovered a 19th century log school. Brian Pigg discovered the hand-hewn logs at his barn's core while removing siding. The barn is located on Browning Lambert Mountain in the Montcalm area. Retired Montcalm High School history teacher Jack Johnson tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraphthat the log structure was once known as the Mullins School. UPLAND (WVVA) - An inmate who escaped from Stevens Correctional Center in Welch Thursday evening has been apprehended.

Lanny Markland was captured in the Upland area of McDowell County around 9:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Corporal Garretson with the Welch detachment of the West Virginia State Police.

Garretson said a corrections officer on his way home spotted Markland walking south along Route 52 toward Mercer County. He was carrying a change of clothes.

Markland has been charged with escape and breaking into a building at the Norfolk Southern rail yard in Kimball. He was previously serving time for second-degree armed robbery out of Mercer County.

The Department of Corrections and Mercer County Sheriff's Department assisted in Markland's capture.

An inmate has escaped from Stevens Correctional Center in Welch.  According to an officer on duty at the center, Lanny Allen Markland left the center around 6:30 PM Thursday.  At the time he was outside doing trustee work taking out garbage.  The officer was unsure of which direction Markland traveled.

Markland is a white male standing 5'10" and weighing 159 lbs.  He has a medium build with brown hair and brown eyes. 

Markland is originally from Nashville, Tennessee.  He was arrested in Giles County, Virginia in 2011 for the armed robbery of the Comfort Inn in Princeton.

West Virginia State Police is searching the area for Markland.
