Funding cut threatens New River gauge

THURMOND, W.Va. (AP) -- Outfitters, the state and Fayette County have joined forces to keep a gauge on the New River operating after it lost federal funding.
The gauge at Thurmond provides data on water flow, stage and volume. Commercial rafting outfitters and kayakers use the data to determine whether the river is safe for whitewater activities.
New River Gorge National River superintendent Patricia Kicklighter tells the Charleston Daily Mail that the National Park Service has historically funded the gauge's operational cost. But the park service can now provide only a third of the funding because of budget cuts.
The West Virginia Whitewater Commission, the West Virginia Wildwater Association and the Fayette County Commission are contributing funding to keep the gauge operating for another year.
The U.S. Geological Survey maintains the gauge.
